Quebec will ban religious instruction in provincially funded daycare centres, Family Minister Tony Tomassi said Wednesday.
Tomassi made the announcement just one day after saying he would not prevent daycare centres from teaching religious beliefs.
On Tuesday, he said Quebec's public daycares reflect family values and religious instruction was normal in the province.
But on Wednesday, he said the practice will be prohibited.
He said an internal audit has revealed about 20 daycares, which receive public funding, include religious instruction in their educational programs.
"So we have to verify it," said Tomassi. Once that's done, he said he will meet with the daycare administrators, and work with them to eliminate religion from their program.
Tomassi refused to commit to withdrawing the permits of centres that do not comply.
A few years ago, Tomassi's department, which was then run by current Education Minister Michelle Courchesne, granted a permit to an Islamic association so it could open an 80-spot daycare centre in Laval, north of Montreal.
The organization's objective is to "spread Islamic education among Muslims and non-Muslims."
Another example is that of the Beth Rivkah centre in Montreal, which is run by Rabbi Yosef Minkowitz. Its website states that all "daily activities are driven by the spirit of Torah and the Jewish tradition."
The daycare brouhaha has unfolded amid the controversy surrounding a Muslim woman in Quebec who was kicked out of a government-sponsored French class because she refused to remove her niqab — a traditional face covering.

Comments!!
Saw this on a bumper sticker a few years ago...
"Don't preach in my school and I won't teach in your church."
'nuff said!
I am not religious, but I respect those who are. But, having said that, I am glad there is a seperation between church and state. I support this move.
Hi Folks,
In Public funded schools, as apposed to private funded schools or daycares, religion (what to beleive in or not) should never be taught. It should be left up to the parents as it has absolutely nothing to do with your education.
Private schools are, of course a different matter.
No different than what is happening with the body bags that Some Islamic women want to wear.
What you do privately is your business, what you do publicly is mine and your business.
Good. We all need to work toward getting religion to its proper place and that is at home and places of worship.
All schools should never teach religious beliefs of any kind. your religious beliefs are between you and your god , your home and your church (whatever that may be).
it has no place anywhere else in society, it creates intolerance.
I would like our rising generation to be taught values and positive character traits such a honesty, generosity, courage, determination, compassion, self control and so on in school. Even the little daycare tikes can learn these. I think it would be good for our society. These and other mutually agreed upon values and traits may be sufficient for a public setting. Home and worship centres may be a more suitable venue for conveying individual religious doctrines. Those who prefer a more comprehensive approach to religious instruction may need to look at private daycare options.
